What a wonderful opportunity to work from home and work when you want to. In fact it seems wrong to call this ‘work’.

Is it a nice day? maybe just work in the morning and take the afternoon off for a relax or some fun stuff. Or it’s a wet weekend, not much to do? get to work, do some freelance writing and have some time off during the week.

This of course relies upon you having good clients, and enough of them that the income can be assured. This may take some time to achieve, however it is very achievable. You can concentrate on your local community, particularly when you work from home, or go farther afield. You need to think about your interests, likes and dislikes, and the level of income you wish to achieve.

There are, however some Writing Tips that will help you in achieving your Writing Goals:

In the early days you will probably take clients with whom you do not have much in common. This is okay initially and we suggest you continue with these clients up to a point. It is however important to have some empathy with your client and to have some belief in what they are trying to achieve, also their products or services. After a while you will be able to chose clients that you really like and can have fun with while you write for them. This will make your writing easier, and it will be fun to achieve the results for which you aim. The familiarity of working for a regular client will also cut down the time you need to spend on their copy.

You want to make good money from your business and the client is in fact your business. Be clear on the arrangements with your client, give them everything you promise and more. Go the extra mile. Do not forget to quietly let them know that you have gone further than your initial arrangement or they cannot appreciate this action. Keep a good database of client needs so you do not have to go through previous discussion on subsequent appointments. Keep the client’s business in mind so that should you read or hear anything that might be of interest to them, send the information to them. Become an important part of their business.

Do not make promises you cannot keep. If timing is asked which is not achievable, tell the client you will do your best and also give a time that you can positively achieve, then when you do better the client will be very happy. Do not promise any results at all, you cannot control the results and it is therefore foolish to make any promises in the response rate. You can ensure that you know your job and do it well.

Ensure your whole agreement with the client is in writing, ie payment, any out of pocket expenses, what is the agreed outcome (is it just copy or also research), any timing issues. You can have a standard contract form but always ensure any agreement is covered either in the standard form or in an addendum to the standard contract. Is the client going to pay 50% up front? this is one way to give you some security of payment. In any case ensure you send your invoice as soon as possible after completion of the work.

Doing your job means it is perfect – ie do not send copy out that has not been proofread, preferably by another person. So often we do not see the mistake that we have made ourselves until it is too late, and then we cannot believe we did not see the error. It is so important that a client sees you as efficient and accurate.

Some simple basics can be very important to your client. Number every page, it is amazing what can happen at the client’s office when the document is not in your control. Use well know software, and check with your client that they have the software on their computer. This is particularly important when dealing with small businesses. And do not forget regular backups of your information.

Work on your writing skills. Read and write every day, it doesn’t matter what, eg magazines, books for pleasure. Do the pleasurable things when you are tired; ensure you do client work when you are freshest or when your body clock works the best, eg early in the morning. Have a special place for ‘Your Office” when you work from home.

One thing is for sure, you must enjoy the process of freelance writing working from home. Nurture those clients with whom you enjoy working. Give yourself rewards, have a break, go out for coffee instead of having one in the kitchen.

Love what you do and enjoy ‘ Lots of joy and success’

Hi and welcome from Sharyn.

You’ve heard it all for years now: The Internet is changing everything. In some cases, that outlook has been an exaggeration. In others, however, it’s been dead-on correct. Consider the business of writing. The online explosion has changed the face of the writing marketplace and is creating new opportunities for those with a knack for writing.

The online information boom is changing the face of the economy and society. The Internet has gone from being an interesting idea to a dominant social force. People are looking to the web for information and entertainment at a record pace and the online user base is growing at a breakneck pace.

Who supplies all of that information that the public is eating up in copious portions? Writers. To make matters even better, those writers are cashing regular (and often substantial) paychecks for their work.

The Internet has created a completely new and fast-growing pool of opportunities for freelance writers. Those who understand how to find those opportunities and how to successfully write for the web can easily leave their jobs in the traditional workforce and establish a new, exciting career.

E-book “Become a Freelance Writer and Live the Life you Deserve” is available at www.seriousselfimprovement.com
